Vivid hair is so fun, but it does fade. How fast depends on the color, your hair’s condition, your routine, and how often you’re using heat. I can’t promise a bright color will last forever, but we can set it up to look good for as long as possible.
The blonde underneath matters
Most vivid colors need a lighter base so the shade actually shows up. But lightening changes the hair, too. It swells the hair and can lift or rough up the cuticle, which can make the hair more porous.
If you’ve got old color, uneven lightening, or a lot of damage, your vivid might grab differently from one section to another. That’s why I want to know your hair history and get the canvas as even and healthy as we reasonably can before we add the fun color. Bleach doesn’t lie, and I’m always going to be honest about what your hair can handle.
Porosity affects how your color fades
Porosity is how easily your hair takes in and lets go of things like water and color. Lightened hair is often more porous, so it might grab vivid color really quickly, but it can let go of it quickly, too. Sometimes that means the color fades unevenly.
Most vivid colors are direct dyes. They add pigment without a developer, instead of permanently changing your natural pigment. They sit on or near the outside of the hair, so washing and everyday wear gradually make them fade. Your hair’s condition and color history affect how long that takes.
Washing and heat can speed things up
Every wash can release some color, especially with shades like red, pink, and copper. Hot water and frequent heat styling can make fading happen faster, too.
Try washing less often if that works for your hair, use cooler water, and turn down the heat on your hot tools. A color safe shampoo and conditioner can help. A color depositing product can also keep your shade looking fresh between appointments, as long as we pick one that works with your color.
Sun and swimming count, too
Sun, pools, and salt water can all mess with how your color looks. If you’re going to be outside or swimming a lot, protect your hair when you can. Rinse it after swimming and follow the care instructions I give you, especially if your shade needs extra upkeep.
Fading doesn’t mean you did something wrong
Some colors just shift as they fade. Blue might soften or change tone, and pink and red can lose their brightness pretty quickly. Two people with the same color can have totally different fade timelines because their hair and routines aren’t the same.
Before we start, I’ll talk you through the upkeep so you know what you’re signing up for. Sometimes vivid hair means refresh appointments; sometimes we can choose a version that fits your budget and your routine better.
Vivid hair takes upkeep, but it should still be fun. Bring me your inspo and we can figure out what makes sense for your hair.
