Hair health starts from within: nutrition tips for stronger hair
By: Vanessa Dougherty @vshairdos
Healthy hair doesn’t start in the salon, it starts from within. While the right products and techniques matter, true hair strength, shine, and growth are a reflection of what you fuel your body with each day. If you’ve been chasing healthier hair, it might be time to look at what you consume.
Before we dive in just a little note: I am not a doctor or medical professional. This is based on general knowledge and my experience behind the chair as a hairstylist. Always consult a professional for personalized health advice.
Nourishment is the Foundation of Hair Health
Your hair is made primarily of protein (keratin), which means your diet plays a direct role in how strong and resilient your strands feel. When your body is lacking key nutrients, your hair is often one of the first places it shows through breakage, dullness, thinning, or slower growth.
Easy Nutrition Tips for Stronger, Healthier Hair
1. Try to add Protein to Every Meal
As a vegetarian, I know it’s not always easy but simply being mindful of your protein intake can make a big difference.
It can be as simple as this:
Eggs in the morning
Chicken or tofu at lunch
Beans or lentils in your dinner
Even small changes help support stronger strands and reduce breakage.
2. Don’t Skip Your Greens
Throw spinach into a smoothie or add a side salad iron helps support hair growth and thickness. You could also try an iron supplement!
3. Snack Smarter for Shine
Grab a handful of almonds, walnuts, or pumpkin seeds for healthy fats that nourish your scalp and add shine.
4. Stay Hydrated (This One’s Big)
Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day. Hydrated hair = softer, less brittle strands.
Electrolytes can also help support proper hydration and keep your body balanced, which reflects in your hair health too.
5. Add “Hair-Friendly” Foods You Already Love
Avocado on toast
Salmon for dinner
Yogurt with fruit
These are easy, realistic ways to support your hair without overcomplicating things.Vitamins That Support Hair Health
Biotin (B7): Strength & growth
Vitamin D: Supports hair cycles
Vitamin E: Scalp health & shine
Vitamin A: Helps with natural oil production (in moderation)
A balanced, whole-food diet usually covers most of these.
Don’t Forget Your Gut HealthIf your gut isn’t absorbing nutrients properly, your hair won’t benefit even if you’re eating well. Try adding:
Yogurt or kefir
Kombucha
Fermented foods
Small additions can make a big difference over time.
Consistency Over Perfection
You don’t have to be perfect just consistent. Hair health is a long game. Small, intentional choices daily will always beat extreme changes that don’t last.
A Stylist’s Perspective
Behind the chair, I see so many clients investing in amazing products but still struggling with dryness or breakage. External care matters but internal care is just as important. When you nourish your body, your hair reflects it.
